August 3rd Group Bargaining Bulletin

A REAL “THANK YOU” MEANS THAT THEY RECOGNIZE OUR VALUE AND AGREE TO A CONTRACT WITH FAIR WAGES AND BENEFITS, AND GOOD WORKING CONDITIONS.

We officially kicked off Nursing Home Group bargaining and presented our proposals that were put together by our 1199 committee. Keeping in mind that the COVID pandemic has had a significant impact on our lives, our proposals include annual wage increases, maintenance of our critical health and pension benefits and provisions that will ensure we can take care of ourselves and our families at the same time we care for our residents. It was hard to believe that management cried “broke.” Especially when they talked about having to pay for COVID testing and PPE. That’s their job!

We were even more shocked when management said they couldn’t afford our health benefits! We not only need to be healthy to take care of our residents, but more than that—we earned those benefits. They are a core part of our compensation. And when short-staffing is worse than ever, who is going to want a challenging job like ours, without health benefits?

Management said they wanted to be sensitive to our situations. How is suggesting that they can’t pay for our health benefits sensitive? A real “thank you” means that they recognize our value and agree to a contract with fair wages and benefits, and good working conditions.

We will win the contract we deserve by showing our unity, strength and activism. Everyone must work together, to build a unified membership. Winning requires that 100% of members are engaged in unified action!
